Cape Fear Men's Club Activities

Currently there are over 35 different activities our members enjoy.  Each group has a coordinator who plans the activities, and communicates with the members on the date, time, and location when that group meets.

The entire club meets every other month (February, April, June, August, October, and December) at the
American Legion Post 10 on Pine Grove Drive for socializing, enjoying a catered meal, and business meeting.

Here's a sampling of our interests:

Biking

Monthly casual rides of 10-15 miles in and around the Wilmington area always end up at a restaurant where riders can exchange stories over lunch and plan the next outing.  In addition to the monthly ride,  bikers can also enjoy a weekly ride on Sunday mornings.

Bowling

If you're looking for one of the Men's Club's most enjoyable and social activities, come join our bowling group at Beach Bowl Cardinal Lanes, located at 7026 Market Street, just past the Military Cutoff overpass.

We bowl twice each week:
-  Mondays at 2:00 pm
-  Fridays at 10:00 am

After our Friday games, many of us head to the Ogden Tap Room for lunch and refreshments—a great opportunity to relax and enjoy good company.

No advance RSVP is required. Just arrive about 15 minutes before bowling begins. The cost is only $9 for three games, and bowling shoes and balls are provided at no additional charge.

Whether you're an experienced bowler or just looking to have some fun, we'd love to have you join us!

Bridge

The Bridge Group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at Rosalie's on Market. Players are assigned to tables of four, with two to four tables depending on attendance.

Members who would like to enjoy lunch before the game are encouraged to arrive between 12:00 and 12:15 p.m. Play begins promptly at 1:00 p.m. We use Chicago scoring, rotating partners after every four hands, and our games typically conclude around 3:00 p.m.

Our group welcomes players of all skill levels, and the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and social. Whether you're an experienced bridge player or looking to get back into the game, you'll find a great group to play with.

If you're interested in joining us or would like more information, we'd be happy to hear from you.

Cigar Club

Meet other local Cigar Enthusiasts. Meet to discuss - and smoke - your favorite cigars!

CULTURE CLUB

Members, spouses, and friends enjoyed a performance of American composers at the Keenan Theatre at UNCW.  The program consisted of selections by Gershwin, Copeland, and Sousa.  The Culture Club attends events in the area including theatre, dance, art, and music.

Fiction & Non-fiction Book Club

We meet every 3rd Wednesday from 1:00pm - 3:00pm at the Ogden Tap Room. Usually our attendance is from 10 to 15 people which lends itself to some very interesting discussions on the book chosen. We select the 12 books for the year from a list generated and voted on by the group late the previous year. The section varies quite a bit given the diversity of the members. Typically, more Fiction than non-Fiction although the two non-fiction books this year are quite good. One by Erik Larson and the other by Ezra Klein.

New members are always welcome, even just to test out their interest in the group. The book for the month’s read is always listed in the Clubs monthly newsletter.

Golf

The Men’s Club Golf Group enjoys friendly competition and camaraderie on the fairways throughout the Cape Fear region. Members gather every week or two to play a variety of local courses, welcoming golfers of all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just enjoy spending time outdoors with friends, the Golf Group offers a great opportunity to enjoy the game, explore area courses, and build lasting friendships.

Headline News

This group will review today’s current events featured on print newspapers and magazine front pages, broadcast media, and social media, discussing them during our monthly meetings held on the fourth Thursday of each month. The group is open to all CFMC members.

Our docket covers current events on local, national, and global levels, including politics, government, social issues, sports, health, science, technology, and religion. We encourage all participants to share their perspectives and aim to create a safe environment in which CFMC members can explore different interpretations of events and freely express themselves.

The Headline News group distinguishes itself by offering a platform that covers a wider range of issues within a single meeting, avoiding dependence on a single subject to dominate. We do not invite guest speakers, as we rely on our members to bring forward issues for discussion. Our focus is solely on developments from the last 48 to 72 hours, excluding historical events.

Larry Schram High Nooners Luncheon and Presentation

A popular monthly feature that brings local community leaders, as well as club member expertise, for presentations to an appreciative audience.  Spirited Q&A after each presentation always reaches and covers items of particular interest to audience members.

Hiking

Hiking on or off trail can be vigorous or relaxing.  The idea of taking a hike in our area is about observing the landscape and nature with friends and enjoying the experience.

History Discussion

The History Discussion Group is a gathering where members come together to explore and discuss the past. Participants talk about historical events, influential people, and the broader social, political, and cultural forces behind major turning points—often spanning from ancient civilizations to more recent history.

The aim isn’t merely to memorize facts but to facilitate learning through conversation: engaging in questions, exchanging perspectives, analyzing interpretations, and linking history to today’s world. It creates a relaxed, engaging environment where curiosity and respectful dialogue enable members to deepen their understanding of how the past influenced ideas, communities, and current events.

The Fear Men’s Club "History Discussion Group" meets on the second Thursday of every month.

Interested in learning more about investing and sharing ideas with fellow investors? Join our Investment Club!

We meet once a month to discuss a variety of investment topics, including market trends, portfolio management, dividend investing, growth stocks, ETFs, retirement planning, and other investment strategies. Members are encouraged to share their favorite stock picks, investment successes, lessons learned, and market insights in a friendly, educational environment.

To add a little excitement, the club also hosts an annual stock market challenge. Each January, participants begin with a fictional portfolio valued at $100,000 and may make monthly trades throughout the year. At the end of December, portfolios are compared to see who achieved the highest return and earns bragging rights as the year's top investor.

Whether you're a seasoned investor or just getting started, the Investment Club offers a great opportunity to learn, exchange ideas, and have fun following the markets together.

Kayaking

One of the more popular club activities is about enjoying nature and our area's waterways with our CFMC friends.  Kayaking excursions are designed for the beginner and expert paddlers.

Pickleball

The Pickleball Group meets every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Pickle & Taps, an indoor facility on 13th Street in Wilmington. The venue provides a comfortable, climate-controlled environment where members can enjoy the game year-round without worrying about heat, rain, or other weather conditions.

Each session features two hours of fun and friendly competition on two courts—and a third court when needed. Members dink, volley, serve, and occasionally debate the score, but they always enjoy great camaraderie both on and off the court.

Whether you're new to pickleball and eager to learn or an experienced player looking to sharpen your skills, you'll find a welcoming group ready to play.

New participants can register at the front desk during their first visit and then use the Court Reserve app to sign up for future sessions.

Shooting Sports

The Shooting Sports group is dedicated to bringing members together in a safe and friendly environment where they can improve their shooting skills no matter their experience level.  No animals are harmed during our shoots – just paper targets and flying clay disks (and, in truth, sometimes those are just barely grazed).

  • Do you have fond childhood memories of shooting your slingshot or peashooter at cans in the back yard?  You should join the group.
  • Do you have a home protection weapon that you haven’t fired or cleaned in three years?  You should join the group.
  • Do you want to spend time with a bunch of great guys and shooting would be a fine excuse to do it?  You should join the group.

Our shooters range from professionally experienced to those who have never fired a gun.  We pair experienced shooters with novices so that new shooters feel, first and foremost, safe in handling and shooting a firearm, and can gain the skill and comfort that comes through camaraderie and practice.  We have a shooting event almost every month, sometimes shooting pistols at local indoor or outdoor venues, sometimes shooting shotguns on a trap or skeet field or a sporting clays course.  No gun?  No problem.  You can rent one at all our venues while deciding whether ownership is right for you.

So if you’ve been thinking about taking up the sport, and would like to do it in a safety-focused and fun environment, join the group and meet the guys!
