CFMC Celebrates USA Semiquincentennial in Style

When a guy turns 250 years old, someone should throw him a big party.  And that’s exactly what the Cape Fear Men's Club did to celebrate America's 250th anniversary.  On May 7th, over 180 Men's Club members and guests gathered at Long Leaf Park for an afternoon of games, music, eating and socializing in honor of our country’s milestone birthday.

The Crowd

Over 180 party goers were in attendance, enjoying a day of fun, food and
socializing with their fellow Mens Club members and spouses.

With such a large crowd some brought their own chairs.

The Games

First heat in the “Egg Relay”:  Joe Hutsell and Allan Bierschenk hoping desperately to avoid getting beat by a couple of ladies

Joe saves his honor & sprints to the finish in 1st place.

Steve Diffley wins the “innovation” award for his “CETS” device (Chicken Embryo Transport Spoon).  His invention did not win favor with the American Dental Association, however.

Taking home the 1st place ribbons in the Egg Relay were Marco (Vip) Vialpando and Nick Roberts.

Plenty of spirited competition in the corn hole toss as well.  Loretta Tarter and Maria Pesek using the proper technique to intimidate the guys.

And the winner of the corn hole toss competition…Frank Amoroso & Rhonda.

There was some less strenuous competition as well:  Greg Bar and Alzira break out the cards with Stan Prushik and Barbara for a game of canasta.

The Music

Live music was provided by the Therapy Sessions Trio.  Long-time Men's Club member Ladd Smith was joined by Stacy Schultz and Greg Blund as their group entertained the crowd for over 3 hours.

The Food

The prep:  You know those delicious baked beans you devoured at the picnic?  They were lovingly prepared by Mens Club member Brent Achee at home using a time-honored family recipe that included onions, bell peppers, bacon, BBQ sauce and then smoked for an hour on Brent’s 800 lb egg.

Traditional picnic fare was the menu for the day:  hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, chips, Brent’s baked beans and lots & lots of cookies for desert.

And while we’re talking about food prep, lets give an absolute loud and great shout out to the cooks, food preppers, game managers, food line replenishers, and Dave Sunberg, our awesome events manager.  This  was the largest picnic ever and our  country's 250th birthday deserved it.
