About Airlie Gardens
Airlie Gardens dates back to 1886, when the Pembroke Jones family hired German landscape architect Rudolf Topel to create a grand Southern estate garden. Topel filled the grounds with azaleas, camellias, magnolias, and wisteria in a sweeping naturalistic style. New Hanover County bought the property in 1999 and opened it to the public.
The star of the show is the Airlie Oak, a 500 Year-old live oak and the largest in North Carolina. You'll also see the Minnie Evans Bottle Chapel, honoring folk artist Minnie Evans, who served as the garden's gatekeeper--her painting Airlie Oak hangs in the Smithsonian. Mount Lebanon Chapel, built around 1835. is the oldest surviving church in New Hanover County.
